Sculpture in soapstone by Brent Barton
Brent Barton has been carving soapstone for over 15 years and still considers each piece to be an enjoyable challenge. Most of his works are inspired by nature but at times he likes to create more abstract pieces. “I can only carve what inspires me at the time” he says. Brent has worked with many different types of stone but he prefers Brazilian soapstone and African Wonderstone. “The softness and homogeneity of those stones makes them relatively easy to work with, they resist fracturing, and the finished sculpture takes on a brilliant shine when it’s polished.”
