ON THE EASLE: Comparing durability of oils and acrylics

Gallery artist, Amanda Jones talks about longevity of arylics

The question of longevity of artist paints comes up from time to time at the gallery. We asked Amanda Jones to look into this topic and provide her views.
Having researched the oil versus acrylic debate, Amanda says “while acrylic paints haven’t been around that long, studies do show that acrylics are as or more durable than oils”.
A scientist who specializes in coatings, Professor Frank Jones of the Coatings Research Institute, Eastern Michigan University concluded that “the weight of available evidence indicates that acrylics will prove to be more durable than oils, and oils have been around for 500 years”.
